Sneakers are the most-worn item most people own, and yet nobody reads the care instructions. The result is a pair that is technically ‘still fine’ but looks tired after six months. A 15-minute routine, done occasionally, keeps kicks looking fresh for years instead of months.
The two-minute habit that saves everything
Wipe the soles and uppers with a damp microfibre cloth after heavy use, before dirt bakes in. This single habit does 90% of the work. For suede, use a dry suede brush instead of water - wetting suede darkens and stiffens it.
The monthly deep clean
- Remove laces (wash them in warm soapy water or replace them - laces are cheap).
- Brush off loose dirt with a soft-bristle brush.
- For canvas and mesh: gentle hand-wash with a mild soap and cold water. Hot water and washing machines can warp midsoles and shrink uppers.
- For leather: use a dedicated leather cleaner and conditioner; never soak it.
- Dry away from direct heat - never on a radiator or in the dryer, which delaminates glue.
- Stuff dry shoes with paper to hold their shape while they air-dry overnight.
Storage and prevention
- Rotate two or three pairs instead of wearing one pair daily - shoes need rest days to bounce back.
- Use shoe trees (or rolled newspaper) to keep toe-boxes crisp in storage.
- Keep them out of prolonged direct sunlight, which yellows white midsoles.
- Apply a water-and-stain repellent spray to new suede or canvas pairs before first wear.
- Clean up grass and mud stains early - the longer they sit, the harder they set.
